What Can Be Seen?

Set off on a 12km boat journey along the Mahamodara River (Kepu Ela), gliding through lush greenery until you reach Wakwella Bridge. This river is a major tributary of the Gin Ganga, which originates in the Rakwana Hills, passes through the Sinharaja Rainforest (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and eventually meets the ocean near Galle.

This serene safari is perfect for nature lovers, offering a peaceful ride through calm waters surrounded by rich wildlife. Keep an eye out for water birds, butterflies, and water monitors, as well as beautiful mangrove forests and colorful water lilies. Sri Lanka is home to 19 species of mangroves, and during this journey, you can spot around seven different types thriving in their natural habitat. These unique, salt-tolerant plants play a vital role in the ecosystem, flourishing in the muddy banks of lagoons, estuaries, and deltas.

The river is also home to stunning aquatic plants, including Hairy Water Lilies (Nymphaea pubescens) and Sacred Lotuses (Nelumbo nucifera)—both valued in Ayurvedic medicine and even used in local cuisine. Along the riverbanks, you'll find Sea Mango trees (Cerbera manghas), whose softwood is traditionally used for mask carving, a famous craft in Sri Lanka’s southern region.

After the boat ride, take a relaxing beach walk at Mahamodara, enjoying the atmosphere and beauty of this destination. Whether you're here for the wildlife, the adventure, or just some peace and quiet, the River promises a truly unforgettable experience.
